In-home healthcare provides an alternative for New Mexicans and their families faced with the challenges of chronic illness, aging, and changed ability. For many families, placing their loved ones in assisted living facilities is unaffordable or inaccessible. Caring for our elderly and sick within the home is important to cultural identity and values of many New Mexicans. In-home health programs allow families to stay together and provide quality, dignified, healthcare services for their loved ones.
Individuals needing in home care are automatically qualified if they already receive Medicaid or Medicare benefits. Those receiving care may also choose to participate either in a delegated or directed model. The directed model allows for patients to choose their own qualified caregivers to help them with everyday activities such as hygiene and grooming, mobility assistance, transportation, light household cleaning, laundry, meal preparation, running errands, making and keeping appointments, and medication reminders.
While in home healthcare services do not replace regular doctor visits or emergency hospital stays, caregivers provide professional assistance and attention to individuals who otherwise would struggle to find comfort and independence. At POI, we invite you to take control of your health and happiness. Make yourself at home, at home.
The Alberta House is modeled on the life of Alberta Rivera (née Jaramillo), a Socorro community member who, with her husband Lawrence, dedicated her life to giving homes to children through foster care and adoption. Alberta’s house was special because she made an effort to adopt children with various levels of ability from severe physical disabilities to cognitive impairments.
In essence, Alberta and Lawrence chose to love those children who often go unadopted because of the perceived challenges presented by their disabilities. She saw beyond that and loved them as children first, undefined by their abilities. Children in her home flourished and have since become scientists, artists, humanitarians, parents; each extremely kind and fiercely independent. Her spirit and grace is what Positive Outcomes Inc. and the Alberta House try to emulate in our everyday work.
Our enthusiastic staff works to provide a safe, clean, and loving environment for children ages 2-5 years old. Children who attend the Alberta House for daycare benefit from interactions from speech, occupational, and physical therapists who make regular visits to the classroom to lead group activities. Children who qualify for any of the outpatient therapy services offered by Positive Outcomes Inc.(POI) can see their therapists at the AH.
Classroom activities include developing language and reading skills, building social relationships, structured play, bilingual Spanish instruction, and opportunities to learn about food and nutrition in our POI community garden. Parents are welcome and encouraged to volunteer and share their unique knowledge with our AH community.
